Interior Design Placement: Tips for a Beautifully Balanced Home

Every placement decision plays a pivotal role in creating a harmonious and inviting space. Whether you’re working with a cozy apartment or a sprawling estate, mastering the art of placement can elevate your home’s aesthetic and functionality. I thought I would share some essential tips for achieving balance and beauty in your home design.

1. Artwork Placement

How high is to high?

Artwork is like the jewelry of the room. Its the final piece that completes the look.

  • Eye Level Rule: Hang artwork at eye level, approximately 57 to 60 inches from the floor to the center of the piece. This ensures that it’s easily visible and creates a cohesive look throughout the room.
  • Above Furniture: When hanging artwork above furniture such as sofas or consoles, leave about 6 to 8 inches of space between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the artwork. This helps visually connect the two elements without overwhelming the space.
  • Grouping: For multiple pieces of artwork, maintain consistency in spacing between each piece. Aim for 2 to 3 inches of space between each frame to create a cohesive gallery wall.

2. Furniture Space

The arrangement of furniture can make or break a design, dictating the walking flow and sight lines for each space . Keeping these things in mind can help you when figuring out where to place your furniture.

  • Conversation Zones: Arrange seating in a way that facilitates easy conversation. Place sofas and chairs facing each other, with a coffee table or ottoman as a central anchor. Allow approximately 18 inches of space between seating pieces for comfortable circulation.
  • Balance Scale: When placing major pieces of furniture, aim for visual balance and proportion. Avoid overcrowding by leaving ample space around each piece. For example, leave at least 3 feet of space between a sofa and a coffee table for ease of movement.
  • Walkway Width: Maintain clear pathways throughout the room by allowing a minimum of 30 to 36 inches of space for walkways. This ensures that people can move around the space comfortably without feeling cramped or restricted.
